Live goat and sheep exports from Georgia are at a record high. According to Geostat, in January-February 2025, $2.624 million worth of small livestock exported from country, which is almost 360% more than in the same period last year. In the first two months of 2024, revenue from sheep and goat exports amounted to $572,000.

It is noteworthy that the largest amount of live sheep and goats left the country during the reporting period was only in 2021 – $2.458 million. However, this year’s export is the highest in the last 11 years (this data has been available on the Foreign Trade Portal since 2014).

As for the countries where Georgian sheep and goats have been exported this year, it looks like this:

• Saudi Arabia – $2.357 million
• Azerbaijan – 142.1 thousand dollars
• Kuwait – 125.6 thousand dollars

In addition, according to Geostat, live goats and sheep worth $36.272 million were exported from the country in 2024. The largest volume – $20.210 million – was exported to Saudi Arabia, followed by Azerbaijan with $14.210 million, and Qatar in third place, where live sheep and goats worth $721.9 thousand were sold last year.

Short description: The head of Tushuri sheep is medium sized and furred. The ewes have straight profile and the rams – slightly hooked; ears are of mediumsize; the rams have long and spirally spun horns, while the ewes’ horns are mostly short and in some individuals arc-shaped. The body is medium sized in length and harmoniously developed having straight lines of the back and the waist, deep and broad chest, long and relatively thick legs, hard hooves, as well as a wide and slightly inclined croup with well-developed fat-tail.

The adult ewes weigh 35-45 kg, the rams – 60-70 kg, and the newborn lambs – 2,5 – 3 kg. At the age of 3,5 – 4 months the lambs weigh 12-19 kg and in autumn, before migration from mountains – 25 – 35 kg; the slaughter output of 1,5 year aged sheep ranges between 43-48%, and the slaughter output of an adult sheep – between 40-47%. The annual shearing of the rams is 4-5 kg, the ewes’ – 2,5 – 3,5 kg, and the lambs’ – 0,8 – 1,2 kg in autumn. An average length of curls is 11-16 cm (maximum – up to 30 cm), undercoat – 6,5 – 9 cm, and iridescent fibers – 7,5- 10,5 cm.
